I can't log into ubuntu as I can't remember the password I set up for my old PC

I have an old pc notebook that I'm wanting to use for when I travel overseas. however I can't remember the password to log in. I have tried the Grub method but when going to root and trying to type 'passwd username' nothing is typing in the comman prompt section.

There are instructions on http://www.psychocats.net/ubuntu/resetpassword that usually are working well.
In case that you are experience problems when following the steps, please provide exact information what is going wrong, and at which step.
