kernel panic - not syncing: attempted to kill init!
Installed Hardy Heron four days ago with the 2.6.24-16 kernel - everything worked fine.
Yesterday I booted up the machine in the morning, had seven upgrades to install (nothing system critical - the freshclam virus-scanner and lvm)
Shut down the computer.
In the evening when I tried to start up the computer I got the following error message:
/init: ./34: Can't open /scripts/functions
[ 20.587228] kernel panic - not syncing: attempted to kill init!
This in both normal and recovery mode.
How do I fix this?

Hello
As far as I know a kernel panic points to defective hardware and the kernel loads modules according to the hardware... So I'd suggest you to check your hardware ,the connections, RAM etc
Regards
Bhavani Shankar,
I don't think it's a hardware-issue since the old 2.6.24-14 kernel
boots up fine. A failure in the hardware would affect that kernel in
the same way.
For the record, I was able to boot that 2.6.24-16 kernel for three
days without any error messages.
