How do I get upstream translations into launchpad for a package in Ubuntu main?

Asked by Caroline Ford

Hi. I'm a bug contact for tuxpaint and involved upstream. There is currently an ever increasing delta between our translations and your translations in launchpad.

http://www.tuxpaint.org/help/po/ Us
https://translations.edge.launchpad.net/ubuntu/hardy/+source/tuxpaint/+pots/tuxpaint You

Where do the translations in launchpad come from? Are they synced from us or from Debian?

How can I get our new languages added to the hardy translations? I don't have the permissions to upload new po files. Who does?

The differences are a nightmare to deal with if we can't upload. Languages we have a po file for that Ubuntu doesn't are:

ftp://ftp.billsgames.com/unix/x/tuxpaint/source/po/ast.po Asturian
ftp://ftp.billsgames.com/unix/x/tuxpaint/source/po/az.po Azerbaijani
ftp://ftp.billsgames.com/unix/x/tuxpaint/source/po/gos.po Gronings
ftp://ftp.billsgames.com/unix/x/tuxpaint/source/po/km.po Khmer
ftp://ftp.billsgames.com/unix/x/tuxpaint/source/po/oj.po Ojibway
ftp://ftp.billsgames.com/unix/x/tuxpaint/source/po/es_mx.po Spanish (Mexico)
ftp://ftp.billsgames.com/unix/x/tuxpaint/source/po/twi.po Twi
ftp://ftp.billsgames.com/unix/x/tuxpaint/source/po/wo.po Wolof
ftp://ftp.billsgames.com/unix/x/tuxpaint/source/po/zw.po Zapoteco

Could someone upload these to hardy?

Is there a good workflow for this sort of thing?

The usual workflow of translations is described on https://wiki.ubuntu.com/TranslationLifecycle. I. e. usually the latest upstream translations are in the source tarballs, where they get extracted and fed to Launchpad, which imports them into its database (unless Ubuntu translators changed strings manually, then they are kept AFAIK).

tuxpaint gets those extracted as well, as you can see on http://launchpadlibrarian.net/13042320/tuxpaint_0.9.17-1ubuntu3_i386.changes ("tuxpaint_0.9.17-1ubuntu3_i386_translations.tar.gz"). Jeroen, don't they arrive in LP translations? Why not?

So is the reason for this that the LP import fails, or that the Ubuntu source package (i. e. the orig.tar.gz) has those outdated translations?

As for upstreams being able to upload po files, that seems to be pretty much a question of permissions. Jeroen, are these controlled by teams? If so, we could just add the tuxpaint upstream folks to it, so that they can update tuxpaint translations with PO file uploads?

Thank you for your reply. I think the problem here is that Ubuntu (and Debian) is two releases behind.

We would love to be able to upload more recent translations, or to have a way of pointing them out so that they are synced.

There were nine uploads stuck in the upload queue. Most of them are for languages Launchpad knows about but which aren't activated, like Gronings, and there's a pt_pt which should be just pt. I'm not sure why the others aren't auto-approved... maybe because they have their country codes in lower case (e.g. pt_br instead of pt_BR). I've guided those into their places.
