I give-up on Linux!

Asked by tbryson1957

This computer I have was once a Windows 98 Computer. Sometime before I got it, the OS was changed to Linux. Since I've had this computer. I can install Linux software to use with Linux, or any other software, either Linux or Windows. I was raised on Windows, and would like to know if someone out ther knows how to completly remove the Linux, and install Windows back into the system. I'm sure it is and easy question to answere, but; I'm pretty stumped, and have tried everything but buying a new Hard Drive. So, if anyone can direct me to a site that will help me, or if you could send complete instructions, I'd appreciate it because my only other option is to pay $199.00 for a computer repair store to do it for me.

You have several options:

1) You could try to run your software which is written for Windows in Ubuntu with wine. Wine can run many but not all Windows applications.

https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Wine

2) You could install VMware Server and run a virtualized Windows, in addition to your Windows software, from within Ubuntu.

3) You could dual-boot Ubuntu and Windows, giving you the option of booting to one or the other. This is a very popular choice for people first switching from Windows to Ubuntu.

4) Finally, you can find the equivalent software for Ubuntu that you use in Windows.

Good luck!

Thank's to both of you for your suggestions, yet; I'm either a complete idiot, or, this computer is not working. Everything I download, downloads fine, but; I cannot install or copy it. Well, maybe the 12th times a charm.

hey there dont give up

if you have already overwritten the entire disk you will need to reload windows from the cd installer

stay with linux if you like it is user friendly and ubuntu offers around 16 000 programs in all and free

if your are having trouble keeping a stable kernel on your system try to download the alternative disk

such as but not specifically xubuntu alt which is a much smaller system version and may be a little more like

the windows your used to

as well when you burn the disk choose a slower writing speed such as 8 or 10^*

alot of readers or lasers are set for 16 or 24 over even though the cd can record info at 52

if you need more help just let someone know

take care

i am disabled as well and there are great programs for speech and vision you can use

also if you need to install the system with the f5 option for high contrast

if its development that you need go with the kubuntu for programming or as you mention about school

there is edubuntu as well

Which programs are you having trouble installing?

The simplest way to install new programs in Ubuntu is to either use Add/Remove under Applications in the upper panel, or use Synaptics package manager under System > Administration.

Alternatively, it is more difficult to install programs written for Windows in Ubuntu, but it can often be done.

Can you help with this problem?
