Dual-boot

I am dual-booting Xp with Ubuntu 7.10. There is no problem when I install Ubuntu after XP. But when format the C-drive(containing Windows) the boot menu disappears although the Ubuntu drive remains untouched. When I force boot Ubuntu the error occurs "Error loading operating system". Only reformatting Ubuntu solves the problem. Can anyone help?

That happens because the MBR is erased, to fix that I suggest you go to this site:
http://www.supergrubdisk.org/

Download it and burn it to a CD. Then, each time you format the windows partition just pop it in and follow the instructions to restore GRUB.
