add/remove no longer accessable

Asked by Rodney

When I go to Applications and then start add/remove, the process starts out as usuall but as soon as the little green bar starts across as it checks for installed applications it just quits before the bar is even half way across the strip and the screen reverts to a blank screen. As a result, I can not remove or add any items. Any suggestions on how to correct this please.

Try starting `gnome-app-install` from the terminal and see the output.

I did as suggested and got the following message after the same results as first described above.
**(gnome-app-install:6057):Warning **: return value of custom widget handler was not a GtkWidget
Segmentation fault (core dumped)

Any further comments as I do not understand what the message really means?

I advise you to search for similar problems on http://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu and report new, if none exist. Also, make sure you have all the updates installed, and all repository indices are in consistent state.

I had no luck in correcting the problem so, since I need the practice anyway, I reinstalled the entire Ubuntu from a disk and incorperated the 200 updates. Now all works as it did before.
