problem with software updater

Asked by czman11

Hi boys and girls.

Today I stumbled on a little problem with my Synaptic Package Manager. During installation of Limewire my system locked up. CPU usage 100% and staying there. After about half an hour I decided to shut down manually and restart my box. Everything went ok until I tried to install Limewire again. Got a message that I need to shut down one of my managers, system updater or so. None of these were running at the time but I opened the synaptic manager and got message to manually correct problem. It said "run dpkg --configure -a" and so I did.

dpkg --configure -a
dpkg: requested operation requires superuser privileges

I guess you can now see my dilemma. I can not finish the job since even though I am the administrator of my machine I do not have superuser privilege. Well I went to the software installer/uninstaller and tried to get "terminal for superuser". Then I ran on the same message about "dpkg --configure -a" in order to download "superuser's terminal". So in a nutshell. I need somehow become superuser without being able to install superuser's terminal. Can you guys out there give me a hand? You know I love you all : )

sounds like a broken package have you checked the filter in synaptic to locate this instance

you could also try to sudo dpkg-reconfigure

hope that helps

Hi Joel

Your line did help me some and I am totally thankful. What I did was....... 'sudo dpkg --configure -a'......... and everything went fine after that. I found out that it was Java that was hosing me down over here. After the code went through its motions I found out that Java packages are broken. I was asked to correct it in Synaptic Package Manager. That did not work before at all. I was able to open it, find the broken Java, fix it and Limewire installed after ward without any problems. Now I can download for my daughter some of the Enigma.

Thanks again
Paul =)
