Having trouble with resolution, downloads, etc.

Asked by Harrison

I'm extremely new to Linux (just installed today) and I'm running into a couple of problems.

1. My screen resolution is set to 1400x900, but there's still two sections (left and right) cut off from my screen. I'm not sure how to change this to full screen or anything, but I've tried all I could, considering I'm just switching over from Windows.

2. I've gone into Add/Remove Applications to install necessary applications (i.e. stumbleupon) and I get the message "The list of applications is not available. Click on 'Reload' to load it. To reload the list you need a working internet connection." Obviously, my internet connection is fine, and the list of applications refreshes normally. I'm not quite sure why it won't let me install this. This message also appears with the majority of the other applications.

3. I can't install the Flash plugin necessary for most media content on the web. When I try to download it, I get the message "cannot find 'flashplugin-nonfree'"

Like I said, I'm new at this, so take it easy on me...

Thanks,
-Harrison

You must be using a LCD monitor?
There should be a button on it to "auto-fix" the screen... One of my monitors just says "auto" on the button.

Try this for the flash, etc... There's a complete walkthrough.

my "auto" button doesn't seem to work, all it does is move the existing window around on the screen a little bit.

i've messed around with the other resolutions and the 1024x768 fills the entire screen...i seriously don't know why i can't fill the proper resolution on my monitor...

About the monitor problem, did you try adjusting the dimensions of your monitor manually? Usually that works when Auto cannot be used.

About the applications that can't be installed, go to System>Administration>Software Sources and select all except for the CD-ROM in the Ubuntu Software tab, once that is done, close the window and then reload the sources as it suggest. After that is all done you should be able to install what you want and Add/Remove should start to work properly.
