Pakage file

Asked by Milan Singha

When I download a package from internet through Synaptic Package Manage Manager it is downloaded to a location. Where is it saved? Can I burn it to a CD so that I have not to download it again? If yes How?

Milan,

Synaptic stores the applications it downloads to this location:

    /var/cache/apt/archives

You can burn them to CD. And then later to install them again, you could simply use nautilus to navigate to /media/cdrom0 (or doubleclick the icon on the desktop) and then doubleclick the application you wanted to (re)install.

That is the simplest method. Later you can research other similar but complex methods.

Please report back here if this solves your question, or of you need further information.

Thanks,

Harvey

When I install a package file it is installed but it does not show any short cut to run the program. I cannot copy the file to the above location. What to do?

I am installing programs like wine,Avast antivirus, Nerolinux. I am using package installer to install it. It shows that the package is installed but I cannot run it anyway.

Milan,

After you install wine through synaptic, the *.deb package will be stored in the directory specified previously. The icon (at least in Hardy) for wine will appear under the Applications menu item.

The original question has been answered which you previously marked solved.

Avast antivirus is a windows application. You cannot install it using synaptic, and synaptic will not save the file. You should not attempt to save it to /var/cache/apt/archives. This directory is for synaptic's use. I recommend you save it to your home directory ~/ and save it there. Installing this application is beyond the scope of the original question. I recommend you open a new question specifically for this. If you wish to scan files for windows viruses, I recommend you take a look at clamav.

Nero linux is commercial linux software, and does not appear to be available for installation through synaptic. Installing it is also beyond the scope of the original question. I recommend again, that you open a new question specifically for this.

Please report back here if this solves your original question, or if you require further information.

Thanks,

Harvey
