Suspected graphics issue

Asked by sanaani

Per the instructions from https://help.ubuntu.com/community/GraphicsTroubleshootingProcedure

Problem summary: whenever I visit news sites that are media intensive, and especially those with video popup ads, my Firefox browser is prone to freezing (and certain to freeze with multiple tabs). I suspect a hardware issue because I installed Ubuntu on an old Windows box to learn Linux. I just don't know how to debug or where to start.

The machine is a Dell Inspiron 620. These are the original specs:

225-0926 : Inspiron 620 Minitower w/ Blac k Bezel
320-9311 : Dell 21.5 Inch Wide, ST2220LB
330-3620 : Dell USB Entry Keyboard
317-7002 : 4GB DDR3 SDRAM at 1333MHz - 2X 2GB
330-8652 : Dell USB Optical Mouse MS111
317-8406 : Inspiron 620, Intel Pentium pr ocessor G630(2.70GHz, 3MB)
318-0857 : 16X DVD+/-RW Drive
342-2717 : 500GB NCQ Serial ATA Hard Driv e (7200 RPM) w/ 16MB DataBurst Cache
330-6097 : You have chosen a Windows 7 Sy stem
331-2553 : Dell Resource DVD with Applica tion Backup
421-5693 : Windows 7 Home Premium 64 bit, English, No Media

The monitor is a Dell U2711 connected via VGA. Ubuntu is installed to the hard drive.

Wily is EOL (end of life) in a matter of days and then will no longer supported in any way.
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Releases

I suggest you either upgrade online to Xenial (Ybuntu 16.04), or wipe Wily off and do a clean install of Xenial from USB / CD. Xenial is LTS and supported until April 2021.

Can you help with this problem?

Provide an answer of your own, or ask sanaani for more information if necessary.
