I need help logging into Unbuntu

Asked by Mike_inadtv

Can anyone tell me how to pull up the desk top on Ubuntu????
It is an old version but it looks like this when I try to log in.
mike@administrator::~$
What do I type in the line? That is what it looks like on my computer and I can’t pull up the desktop if there is one.

try typing "startx" to get to a graphical user interface, if it says something like server is already active for display 0 then press CTRL-ALT-F7

Assuming you didn't login in on a graphical logon (gdm), you're on the console (everything is black exc. the text?).

(if you did login on a graphical login and you've got a prompt - you could be in failsafe - try typing "/usr/bin/gnome-session")

Have you tried hold CTRL-ALT-F7 to attempt to move to X?

It sounds like X is running if you get that error message - can you see it in a "ps aux" listing?
