Setting Up Broad band connection on Ubuntu(Dapper)

Asked by Vijay

I am unable to configure broadband internet connection on Ubntu (Dapper). My ISP has given a static IP which is like for eg., 10.10.150.125 and the gateway address as 10.10.140.1. In this the gateway network address is in a different network and just arp packets just keep flying in my machine without any useful network connection. The same stuff works fine on windows. Anyone has any idea of things. I have set the proper DNS server id's as well provided by my ISP. Let me know what is happening.

Thanks and Regards,
-vijay

It's only in a different network if the netmask is 255.255.255.0, but for you it looks like the netmask should be 255.255.0.0. Is that what it is in windows? Can you paste the output of the following commands on Windows?

ipconfig /all
route print

The netmask is 255.255.254.0.

I configure the eth0 address using ifconfig.
When I try to add the default route as my gateway address, it doesnt gets
added. When checked on tcpdump, I can see a lot of arp packets flying. I
dont know whether the cable modem is responding. I will get you the info you
requested soon.

You don't have any connectivity (router/modem) device between your computer and the WAN?

If you have a network address of 125.99.250.0, then a 255.255.254.0 subnet mask would limit your addressable network space to the range 125.99.250.0 - 125.99.251.255. Since your gateway (125.99.240.1) is outside of that address space, you would be unable to reach it. Double-check to make sure you don't have a typo in either the gateway address or the assigned ip address. If your gateway address is really 125.99.250.1, your subnet mask would be valid and it will work.

No, the gateway address is correct as well as the static IP. U can not in my
dump from windows where gateway is set as I have told. I am to confused
about this. But it works fine on windows without any problem. Please check
my dump from windows and see if anyone can help. There is a cable modem
between the computer and the net which i want to use. When I start upuntu,
the network connection from my computer to the cable modem is working and
tryin to send arp packets and because of the ip and gateway discrepency, it
never gets a proper response. See if anyone can help.

A friend of mine writes:-

"I note the guy's default route specifies the interface address. So, while his netmask is clearly wrong, it might work anyway. He could probably fix it on Linux by doing:-

route add -host 125.99.240.1 dev eth0

Doesn't change the fact that his network configuration is odd. There's a way of specifying the route in /etc/network/interfaces"

Hope that helps.

Thank you for your time and response. I tried adding as per the
command and it seems its added fine. I am out of station, so I can
test whether it works only on tuesday 2nd Jan 2007. Will let you know
if it works. Yes its true that the network configuration that my ISP
gave is very odd.

Thank you very much. I am able to connect to the net finally from linux
using the broadband connection. I am sending this mail from the connection
only. Finally it worked. I added the route first thru host and then tried
pinging that machine and it worked. Then I added the same IP as my default
route when the routing started to use my route ip and was able to connect to
the net. Thank you for your inputs.

The net is working now. I added the route thru the -host option, and pinged the route host, it worked and then I added the route as the default route and finally it worked. Thank you guys for your help.
