Login problem with Ubuntu cloud image 16.04 on VirtualBox

Asked by Raju on 2016-07-11

I was trying to use Ubuntu 16.04 cloud image xenial-server-cloudimg-amd64-disk1.vmdk [downloaded from https://cloud-images.ubuntu.com/xenial/current/]on VirtualBox but facing two problems:

1. Booting the VM stops indefinitely following the message "...random: nonblocking pool is initialized ". The same VM image on Vmware workstation takes to the the 'ubuntu login' successfully.

2. Since the cloud image doesn't have ubuntu password, I tried to pass this with "ro init=/usr/lib/cloud-init/uncloud-init ds=nocloud ubuntu-pass=ubuntu" as described in https://help.ubuntu.com/community/UEC/Images/KVMKernelOptions, but it doesn't seem to work as the login doesn't accept the password.

Thanks for any help regarding the issues.

Did you MD5 test the file you downloaded?

Yes, I did MD5 test the file and it was ok.

A workaround of replacing console=ttyS0 from /boot/grub/grub.cfg and /etc/default/grub with net.ifnames=0 [proposed by Fryderyk Dziarmagowski (freddix) in another post https://bugs.launchpad.net/cloud-images/+bug/1573095] solves the first problem at least temporarily! Hope for the permanent solution soon.

Still have no clue on the second one, which prevents from logging in!

"the login doesn't accept the password":
Do you get a "wrong username or password" error message, or what is happening?

Raju (rajustha2000) said : #6

It says 'Login incorrect'!

Have you tried one of the older images?

Raju (rajustha2000) said : #8

Yes, I tried older images also, but had the same problem.
