Trying to run WoW in Ubuntu 16.04, Wine 1.9.13

Asked by Scott Moellmer

Trying to run World of Warcraft game in Linux Ubuntu 16.04, using wine 1.9.13. Wow version is Legion.

Maximum FPS tops out at 8, and addons cannot be found or activated, are the worst problems. Also keep getting a popup stating
'the program Battle.net Helper.exe has encountered a serious error and must close.' Closing this popup only makes it
reappear about every 5 seconds.

Performance is abysmal, many errors. Asking for help in the WoW forums gives me the response that Wow does not
support Linux as an OS, so they cannot help me.

Pretty much all of the Youtube videos, Linux and Wow forums have posts that are years and or versions out of date, and do not
work. Some of them, like editing Config.wtf and regedit, made the problems worse.

I would like someone who runs Wow on Linux who is patient and skilled to take me thru whatever is needed to make the game
work properly.

"help me Obi Wan Kenobi, you're my only hope..."

Scott

The WINE AppDb is invaluable here. You may need to use an earlier version of WINE if the version you have doesn't perform for the application you desire. WINE is a complex creature and getting the latest doesn't always mean your application will work better.

I have seen that site (among MANY others) and tried some of the things listed therein. All 'pacman' seems to do is
create a rather primitive version of the old arcade game. if it's doing something else, i can't tell.

And another site tells me 'OpenGL' is completely obsolete and should never be used.

The problem is, i have no idea who is trustworthy/correct/up to date when various posts conflict.

But i suppose i can try these things again, perhaps better luck. will c. ty. ;)

K, tried the first one again. Sudo tells me that 'pacman' command not found. Game starts and runs, 7 fps this morning.
Exiting, i cannot find any WoW folder, so unable to find and edit Config.wtf. Any thots?

sudo pacman -S lib32-libldap wine All that does, other than tell me pacman command not found, is put a silly pacman game on the pc.

World of Warcraft/WTF/Config.wtf this file, as far as i can tell, does not exist on my pc.

Now restart the game and change the resolution and graphic settings. Restarted game, at 7 fps, tried to change graphic settings (altho the article says nothing about HOW or to WHAT) to lowest possible settings. now when game starts, i get about half a screen that looks like minecraft quality graphics (ie terrible) and wont let me get to system, or even logout of game. i have to reboot PC at this point.

Very very frustrating. ;(

Which do you want WoW or pacman?

I looked at site "https://appdb.winehq.org/" and read that your problem, may have to do with "gnutls". Please go to that site and look for Ubuntu 16.04 procurers. That is if you want WoW. Did not read about pacman.

pacman is the arch linux PACkage MANager. The equivalent for debian and derivatives (including ubuntu) is apt-get.

So replace
   sudo pacman -S lib32-libldap wine
with
   sudo apt-get install lib32-libldap wine
for ubuntu - (this is assuming those packages are in the repos).

Can you help with this problem?
