system sounds don't play in 8.04 beta Rhythmbox ok

Asked by William J Michalouski

I have sound working in Rhythmbox and the login screen, but I cannot hear system sounds (i.e. login, logout)
from the sound preferences window.

I could only find a esound package that wants to remove pulseaudio-esound-compat and ubuntu-desktop.

hmmm...what hardware are you running? what is your sound card?

I assume that you have system sounds (in the sound preference menu) enabled?

I have a Dell 8400 with a Sound Blaster Audigy 2 sound card. I do have the system sounds enabled. I have sound when I play Rhythmbox and when the login window appears the login sound plays, but not from the sound preference window.

I think this problem was caused by the ubuntu's change to the pulse audio server, it can be resolved by the installation of e-sound package.

"sudo apt-get install esound" install the esd sound server which I think that was being used by the system. with the change to the pulse audio, they left the esd out...

By the way, the apt is a package manager which allows you to install any package available without worrying about dependencies...

Hope this helps...
