LibreOffice 5.1.4.2 Calc freezing when opening spreadsheet in Ubuntu 14.04 LTS

Asked by Mohamed Kikia

When I try to open a spreadsheet/excel file it greys out and freezes. At the bottom left hand corner it says "calculating". It just hangs there. Now when I run Writer or Impress, they work fine, but after trying to run Calc, they too do not open.I have to re-boot to get Write and Impress to work. This happens with any spreadsheet irrespective of size.

LibreOffice was installed via the Synaptic Package Manager in Ubuntu 14.04 LTS

I have completely uninstalled LibreOffice and reinstalled 3 times with the same result.

Uninstalling a package and reinstalling it does nothing. You are removing data from the drive then putting the same data back in the same place. How is that a fix?

If you rename the configuration folder for libreoffice under ~/.config then launch the application is it better? This folder holds the configuration of the application. Renaming it will make the application generate a vanilla set of settings

I tried renaming the folder as was suggested on another forum. This did nothing. Unfortunately I had to dump LibreOffice and am now using OpenOffice which is working fine. I was in a fix as I had work to do. I also read somewhere else that LibreOffice has quite a few bugs.

So for now I will have to stick with OpenOffice. Thanks for the suggestions.
