On Ubuntu if you want to execute administrative actions, you have to use the sudo command (e.g. "sudo apt-get update").
This command will ask for your own password as conformation for this administrative action.
Please be aware, that you will not get any feedback on screen when you type your password for the "[sudo] password for ..." prompt - no echo, not even '*' placeholders. Just 'blind' type your password and press the 'enter' or 'return' key.
