Having the mail icon notify you when you get new mail in Ubuntu 16.04 LTS

Asked by Not Telling

I was wondering if its possible to make the mail icon in the top right hand corner of Ubuntu 16.04 LTS's desktop notify you when you get new mail? I am finding I only get notifications of new mail if Thunderbird Mail is open and I would rather get notified regardless if it is open or not.

I had a look in the Help application under 'Email & email software' but couldn't find anything on it.

Cool. Is it possible to do in Ubuntu though or will I need an application?

Just install the mail-notification package and configure it accordingly. (If you are using evolution as e-mail system, you should install and use mail-notification-evolution.)

Thanks, but unfortunately that application isn't available on Ubuntu 16.04 LTS.

It exists, but it is not available for the version of Ubuntu which I am using. In the link in reply #1, if you look on the left hand side you will see under available versions that Ubuntu 16.04 LTS is not there.

This is just a problem with the https://apps.ubuntu.com site which for whatever reason shows incomplete data.
You will not find firefox for Ubuntu 14.04 either, but that definitely exists, too.

Just use Ubuntu Software center to install the package, or try with synaptic, or command line, or other means.

Just to let you know (in case you haven't tried it) that application is totally crap. It opens to focus every time Ubuntu start, it can't run in the background without it showing on the application bar and sounds don't work in it. I uninstalled it. I figured such a notification is too advanced for hobby developers but thats ok because Ubuntu is free so I don't expect too much from it.

Firefox, VLC, Kodi (formerly XBMC) and SSL that every website using HTTPS cost exactly the same as Ubuntu

What a pathetic statement....

Except they are produced for the Windows operating system, not just Linux, which is why their much better. Its not pathetic, its a fact - Windows developers are better than Ubuntu developers, hence why only 1% of people use Ubuntu.

I can't even print a text file in Ubuntu, I have to boot into Windows 10 Home. That says allot about free software. Ubuntu is good for browsing the web though I have to give it that and its not all that bad, but when you need to get important stuff done is just can't do it.
