Dell Latitude E6520 running 16.04 LTS Freezes constantly

Asked by Corey Allen

Excited to be new to the Linux community. Running into a problem with my Dell Latitude E6520. Installed 16.04 with no problems. The laptop will randomly freeze tight for no apparent reason. It will freeze while doing nothing, or light internet stuff, running terminal, libre office, or anything with no warning. The mouse will still move, but no clicks. None of the keyboard shortcuts like SysRq RESUB work. Only a hard powerdown.

I've tried looking at the syslog but cant seem to make heads or tail. Is there anything else I can look at or test to help trouble shoot?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I don't work for Canonical, but I have found with computers that they tend to freeze when it comes to problems with hardware and drivers. There could be a type of safe boot mode in Ubuntu like there is with the Windows operating system that lets you boot up the operating system using minimal components. This may help you single out and eliminate a potential malfunctioning piece of hardware.

I hope this helps.

Have you tried testing your RAM using Memtest86 from GRUB?
