If you run:

sudo modprobe -r psmouse
sudo modprobe psmouse proto=imps

Is it better, if so then we can make the configuration stick.

I tried modprobe now and the problem still exists.

Try :

sudo modprobe -r psmouse
sudo modprobe psmouse proto=raw

Tried, but the second line gives

sudo modprobe psmouse proto=raw
modprobe: ERROR: could not insert 'psmouse': Invalid argument

Thanks so much for your time.

Try:

sudo modprobe -r psmouse
sudo modprobe psmouse i8024.reset

Or

sudo modprobe -r psmouse
sudo modprobe psmouse i8024.nomux

Or

sudo modprobe -r psmouse
sudo modprobe psmouse irqpoll

sudo modprobe -r psmouse
sudo modprobe psmouse i8024.reset

sudo modprobe -r psmouse
sudo modprobe psmouse i8024.nomux

these two seem to have improved the experience, but I could still feel intermittent delays, wandering. "irqpoll" made things worse.

Just couple of questions:

Shouldn't I see "touchpad" on running "xinput --list". The output is same as I had previously. Even on my system settings "Mouse and Touchpad", I don’t see touchpad tab.

Also, I am not seeing "touchpad" in cat /proc/bus/input/devices.

Depends on what the actual hardware really is.

I tried to search for the hardware details, but didn't find any in Dell website.

UBUNTU LATITUDE E5570 page says "Unknown AlpsPS/2 ALPS DualPoint TouchPad ", don't know if this means anything and could help solve my problem.

As I keep using it now, I feel the "improved experience" is still poor, and the intermittent delays and lag is annoying.

Many thanks.
