Windows does not recognise Disk Utility formatted NTFS drives

Asked by ViBE

If I format my HDDs on Linux to NTFS with Disk Utility Windows will not recognise the filesystem. The Disk Management detect the drives well but cannot detect the exact filesystem. Only Ubuntu recognise it as NTFS.

If the partition is empty then format it in Windows. Remember, NTFS is a proprietary file system so any effort to access, manipulate or create NTFS partitions is purely on a best efforts endeavour.

Of course I can format it in Windows but why is this option available in Disk Utility if it's not fully compatible with the targeted system environment? What is the point of this?

No idea. I wouldn't personally trust anything but Microsoft to make NTFS partitions. NTFS is awful anyway. Ext2 is far more reliable and you can add functionality to Windows (like it needs to do anything useful) to read and, I believe, write to Ext2.

Definitely. I also hate MS. But EXTx performance under Windows is not too promising and I still need Windows for some reasons. So that's why I need NTFS partitions sometimes and I prefer better Linux for formatting too.

I'd stick to creating NTFS in Windows. I suggest you report a bug regarding Ubuntu making the file system etc etc etc

I would. But I'm not sure how to report. The tutorial looks outdated. I never did before and I have no clue about the package name.

Can you help with this problem?
