WD Element-1042 Not mounting as well as detecting some time

Asked by Ekanath Chougale

Hello every one.

I have been using WD Elements 1042 1 TB External USB Hard Drive. It was working finely. On some day I was trying to copy some files on friends computer having Windows. However it was too slow. Hence the task of copying was not complete. Hence I tried to safely remove the drive. However the said attempt was also not successful. Hence I removed my Hard Disk directly. Then I tried to connect the drive to my Ubuntu System. It was not detected on many time. However at one time, suddenly following error message appeared.

Error mounting /dev/sdb1 at /media/ubuntu/One & Only: Command-line `mount -t "ntfs" -o "uhelper=udisks2,nodev,nosuid,uid=1000,gid=1000,dmask=0077,fmask=0177" "/dev/sdb1" "/media/ubuntu/One & Only"' exited with non-zero exit status 13: The disk contains an unclean file system (0, 1).

The file system wasn't safely closed on Windows. Fixing.

ntfs_attr_pread_i: ntfs_pread failed: Input/output error

Failed to read NTFS $Bitmap: Input/output error

NTFS is either inconsistent, or there is a hardware fault, or it's a

SoftRAID/FakeRAID hardware. In the first case run chkdsk /f on Windows

then reboot into Windows twice. The usage of the /f parameter is very

important! If the device is a SoftRAID/FakeRAID then first activate

it and mount a different device under the /dev/mapper/ directory, (e.g.

/dev/mapper/nvidia_eahaabcc1). Please see the 'dmraid' documentation

for more details.

Hence as suggested in message I tried to run chkdsk /f on my friends laptop for my drive. However my hard drive was not being detected. However one day, after long wait. My hard drive was detected on windows laptop. The size of data was also shown. Then check disk utility of windows was automatically started. Hence I allowed to get it completed. It almost took 50 hours to complete. Thereafter also my hard drive was not detected on windows. Lateron it started to be detected on windows but too slowly. Hence again I tried to connect my hard to ubuntu. Today suddenly my drive was detected, mounted and all the folders on my drive were shown properly. Hence I tried to copy some important folders as my drive contains my most important data.

Thereafter list of files to be copied was being prepared. However it also took long time and suddenly stopped. Thereafter, my hard drive is not being detected on many time, though detected on some occasion, it is not being mounted. Disks utility of Ubuntu time shows the details about the drive but not for all times.

I have already tried many methods to solve the problem. One of them is testdisk. However it is too technical. Hence I could not understand. Foremost utility also stops at the command "Processing : stdin"

My hard drive is ok. However due the above said problem I am unable to use the same. I have most important data on it.
Hence Please help me to solve the problem. Waiting for earliest reply.

When you have booked to Windows. Shut down the PC after using the safe remove feature in the OS. Then cold boot to Ubuntu and connect the device once you have logged in.

Hello

My Hard drive is now detected. I tried to copy some important files. However it takes long time.
I am trying to paste screenshot of my screen, visualizing how it looks when drive is connected.
Let me know how to upload.

The whole story sounds as if the hard disk is not healthy any more.

For uploading screenshots: You have to upload them to some image hosting service of your choice, and post the link that you get in your message. There is no possibility to upload pictures to answers.launchpad.net

If the drive is broken, the only reasonable alternative is purchasing a new one.
You should try copying all important data from that drive to another one as long as this is possible, even if it lasts very long.
