Showstopper bug, can't even install Dapper 3. Installing base system fails; can't find appropriate kernel image in APT sources?

Asked by duckdown

Hi there. I cannot even get the new version of Dapper, Flight-3 to install. I get major problems at the installing base system step. But, lets start from the beginning.

I own a Dell D600 Latitude laptop (a very popular laptop, many others have this as well.) It generally requires the 3rd party Windows drivers located at http://www.duckd0wn.net/tmp/wlan/ (bcmwl5.inf and bcmwl5.sys, i uploaded them there so I could download them whenever I reinstall) I was SHOCKED to see that when I started the install procedure and was at the Network Autoconfiguration part that it detected a BCM4306 Intel b/g Wireless Adapter (Which as absolutely right) and detected it as eth1 (not wlan0 like I'm used to when using NDISwrapper, I'm not sure if the install program does also) However, it is apparently using the wrong drivers for it. What I mean is, even after entering the right WEP key it didn't work.. So I opened a second console, and a 'ifconfig eth1 down ; iwconfig wlan 0 key (mykey)' but then on 'ifconfig eth1 up' it yields a "SIOSIFFLAGS: No such file or directory" error (Which is obviously why it wouldn't work at the DHCP stage).. Also, 'dhclient eth1' yields a "send_packet: Network is down".. This is not my urgent problem, as I was planning on just using WIRED ethernet on eth0 which worked fine with DHCP then would have done the NDISwrapper by hand after installation. This is something you might want to get fixed, you should check the .inf and .sys files from the website I linked to you.. Those are the ones I use and work perfect for my BREEZY installation.

My major show-stopper bug though occours as early as the "BASE INSTALLATION" step in installing. DHCP configured my network fine, and I chose my country as United States, assuming it uses that as a mirror selection also.. It downloads several packages and starts to extract some, it gets to about 60% through the "Installing Base system" progress bar when I get a screen pop up telling me that "There is no suitable kernel image found in your APT Sources" followed by a red screen telling me "The installer cannot find a suitable kernel package to install" followed by ANOTHER red screen telling me "Installation step failed. The failing step was: Installing base system"

There is nothing I could to fix this, and GRUB wouldn't install if I skipped it because it couldn't find some kind of critical kernel-img file.

I need some help with this! There is no reason for me to be getting these errors; I didn't even manually specify nor was asked to for the APT sources! Why can't it find the right files?

any additional information you need please feel free to contact me! I want this resolved; I'm dying to use the new KDE 3.5 and stuff

Here is the lspci from my system, alot of people asked me for it in #kubuntu on irc.freenode.net. This is taken from my WORKING Breezy installation, which I had to go into rescue mode and fix grub because dapper broke it when it couldnt do that part of grub

You may want to try installing a newer version of dapper to see if these bugs still exist: http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/daily/20060203/

If you don't want to, and/or the bugs still exist could you open two bug reports for these issues? I've not been able to find anyone else reporting them.

The URL for reporting these two bugs is https://launchpad.net/distros/ubuntu/dapper/+source/debian-installer/+filebug

When making these bugs could you please note in the bug report that this is a regression from Breezy.

It'd be useful to future ubuntu testing, if you have time to fill in a Ubuntu laptop report at http://wiki.ubuntu.com/LaptopTestingTeam.

There is currently a discussion on the wifi problem which you may like to read on the ubuntu-devel mailing list. You can read it here:
https://lists.ubuntu.com/archives/ubuntu-devel/2006-February/014989.html

There's also a discussion on the forums about the wifi drivers here http://www.ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=114922

I realise they're not much help at present, however they may be useful for future reference.

Have you tried to install a newer version of dapper? Flight 6 is now available.

Could you close this support request if the problem is solved.

Hey there, I'm actually using Flight 6 now.. Not having this problem
anymore, so sure, I can close it.. I'm not sure about how though?

I clicked the ticket link in the e-mail you sent me but I can only find how
to edit the bug, and/or change the severity.

Where do I go to close the request?

Strangely enough I can't find a way to close a support ticket via email.

If you click on the ticket link inside this email it'll take you to the
webpage, I think you then have to make a comment via the comment form
and then check the box saying 'this has been answered' underneath.

Glad everything has worked out for you.
