Problem booting Ubuntu 14.04

Been having some intermittent problems recently with Ubuntu 14.04, and now it won't boot. I just get the prompt screen and GRUB RESCUE. Where do I go from there? I tried fixing this with Disk Repair, but it got stuck purging Grub: just went on and on. I switched off the computer several hours later. Could someone advise me how to fix this?

Boot to live CD / USB and chroot to the installed OS. You can then reinstate GRUB to the MBR of the drive. OmgUbuntu has a guide named "Sticking it to GRUB"
