How to install epson 4490 on ubuntu 8.04 64 bits

Asked by Romeo Olida

I was able to install epson 4490 for ubuntu 7.10, 32 bit configuration. Now I have a 64 bits system, and ubuntu 8.04. I tried to do the same procedure by getting the epson 4490 Linux driver from Epkowa. When I tried to convert the .rpm files, I can't see the .deb files that is supposed to be produced as a result.
So far, I can't get sane to detect my scanner. I'd appreciate help from somebody who had success on this same issue. Thanks a bunch!! :)

I have the same scanner (4490 photo) and I has the same problem downloading the new file from Epkowa.
So I tried with the old file .rpm (I had a copy on my pc) only for the plug-in: it works (make the .deb file).
Then I continue the normal procedure as explained on ubuntu forum (for my language the link is http://wiki.ubuntu-it.org/Hardware/StampantiScanner/ScannerEpson).
At the end all works well like on my old ubuntu 7.10

So I suppose the problem is created by the new plug-in file available from Epkowa.

Good work with your scanner!

There are now i386 and amd64 Debian packages for the Perfection 4490 at http://www.avasys.jp/lx-bin2/linux_e/scan/DL1.do.

Can you help with this problem?
