Ubuntu 16.04 continously crashing on Sony Vaio VGN-FS115Z

Asked by Alberto Manuel Da Silva Pereira

Hello,

I wanted to use Ubuntu 16.04 on my former Sony Vaio VGN-FS115Z but I am having problems with what it looks like the video driver for the built in Nvidia GeForce Go 6200.

I have uploaded a video with the issue when booting from the CD because at least I does not freeze. and even allows me posting this question.

https://youtu.be/kHC6P3Brd1k

Once installed on the Kingston 128Gb SSD drive, it gets worse and in most cases just lets me to move the cursor by using the pad but with no response to clicks. Other times it just simply shows patterns and colours on the screen.

Is there any way of trying another video driver?

The computer had Windows XP working properly. Then it was updated to Windows 8.1 and later to Windows 10 which run slow and had no compatible video drivers for the NVidia GeForce Go 6200 and so I thought about using Ubuntu as the best solution installed from scratch.

Thank you very much in advance if you could give me any hints!

Best regards from Spain.

By default you will use the nouveau driver. I don't think the chip you have is supported by the nvidia-current package any more.

Have you tried a non-compoziting session like LXDE?

Hi! Thanks for your answer.

I am new to Ubuntu, do you mean another Linux Package? That is what I found searching Google. I am trying changing the X.Org X Server (Nouveau) to the Nvidia Legacy binary driver version 304.131 by using the option that I found under Software and Updates -> Additional Drivers and seems to be working so far. I'm just giving it a go...

The nouveau driver is part of a default install. If the additional drivers are working OK then cool

Actually it doesn't. After crashing with some yellow patterns, now I don't get it to boot properly anymore. After entering the logging password, it gets stuck in a black screen with the mouse pointer and every five or six minutes I get a message saying that an error occurred but it goes black again so fast that I don't even have enough time to read it...

Is there any way of booting in safe mode and install any standard VGA driver?

I will get the LXDE distribution and try it but I really wanted to use Ubuntu this time.

Thanks again and best regards!

I installed Lubuntu 14.04 and runs properly and now realised that it there is a newer release 16.04 so I hope that with Lubuntu will do fine...

Thank you very much for your support!
