ubuntu 8.04 updater no longer works

Asked by SwissMike

Installed Ubuntu 8.04 on a HP S3330. Have all patches installed until Apr 9; tells me today (Apr 10, 18:33 CET) that 65 updates are available. Package Manager starts, stays busy indefinitely; dialog box asking for root password never comes. Also noticed that other typical items from the 'System'-'Administration' asking for the root password, no longer work.

I tried in the terminal to enter ' sudo apt-get update' but get message " unable to resolve host".

What am I doing wrong?

If you need a detailed rundown of the config, please provide instruction and I will send it.

Greetings,
Mike, Switzerland.

just to exclude explicitly no brainers errors:
...unable to resolve host...
You have a functional network connection with that computer?
You can surf the web for example?

type

apt-get update

and paste the result here

this information usually means there is no internet connection to package sources

also paste here your /etc/apt-get/sources.list

to answer 'cue':
yes, I have internet access. These messages are sent from the same machine.

to answer ' trylik':
- entered 'apt-get update' and got "E: Could not open lock file /var/lib/apt/lists/lock - open (13 Permission denied)
E: Unable to lock the list directory"

- contents from ' /etc/apt/sources.list' (folder /etc/apt-get does not exist on my system, also checked for hidden folders):

Any ideas where the issue might be?

noticed something. Topright in the menubat, Update Manager menu item ' show notifications' is normally ticked. When I select the menu item (so tick is off) and then select the Update Manager menu item 'Preferences', I immediately get the dialog box asking for my root password. Once that is entered, Update Manager runs fine and updates my system.

I again checked the command 'sudo apt-get update' and get same error message: "unable to resolve host".

Hope this helps getting closer to resolving this issue.

Greetings,
Mike.

Problem solved.

Turns out that the localhost setting in /etc/hosts was incorrect. The fix is going to menu ' System', then 'Administration', then 'Network'. Select the tab Hosts, enter password in dialog box, then change the localhost name:

127.0.0.1 PCName.networkName

to

127.0.0.1 PCName

and save it. Done. Whole problem gone. Interestingly, Bug #195308 confirms the same problem. Hope this small issue gets fixed before the Apr 21 release as it was nasty while it lasted.

Greetings from Switzerland,
Mike.

Ok, you guys are going to laugh at me but I need help. I have this same problem but I can't fix it because I don't know what my PCname is.
How can I find the name of my computer?

What I meant with 'PCName' was my login name. Simplest way to see is to go to menu ' Applications', select 'Accesoires', then 'Terminal'. The prompt shows 'xxxxx@yyyyyy', where xxxxx is your login name, and yyyy your computer name.

Hope this helps.

Greetings,
Mike.

SwissMike

I know why I was messing all this up.

I was changing things under the "Hosts Tab" I needed to go to the general tab for this to work. Everything is fine now. Thank You SwissMike for your time. I am so happy that my computer works now. Thank you.
