Corrupted Netwrok manager - nointernet access from Ubuntu

Asked by Ian Grant

As a result of late at night impatience waiting for Thunderbird, I screwed up my Network Access and Network Manager.
My only internet access is now via a Windows 10 partition. Going to the Network Access in Settings reveals a Proxy menu which is not compatible with my Ubuntu version.

Other functions of Ubuntu seem to work normally.

Is there any way I can restore the corrupted parts of my 14.04 LTS installation ?

Alternatively should I try to upgrade/install 16.04? If so, how do I do it whilst keeping my files? I have backed up as much as possible on a USB stick.

If you boot to the Ubuntu 16.04 install media it should offer to upgrade the standing install.

Do you use a proxy for Web access?

Thank you.

Your suggestion to boot to Ubuntu 16.04 install media is one I had considered though I was uncertain if it might make things worse. However, I will try.
I do not use a proxy for Web access.
