Help with installing software

Asked by Ken Mason

I just recently started using Ubuntu, excellent so far, however I'm having a little difficulty trying to install software. I understand from the help documentation that it appears that all software must be in packages. However how do I install software I download from the internet, such as .exe & .msi software? The error I keep receiving is "softwarename.exe cannot be opened. No application suitable for automatice installation is available for handling this kind of file.

Hello !

The usual way to install softwares in Ubuntu is via Synaptic Package Manager (found in System > Administration). You just have to research for the software you want and check it for installation before applying. It will download and setup the package automatically.

Please also note that the software built for Windows won't run natively on Ubuntu. Sometimes, softwares are available on bath platforms (Firefox, VLC, ... to name a few), but usually you'll want to find alternative : softwares providing same functionality, but not from the same developer.

Hope this helps !

Regards,
Benoît
