Programs freeze after entering fullscreen mode

Asked by Arthur Azevedo de Amorim

After a recent routine update, I noticed that some programs freeze when entering fullscreen mode. I am usually still able to move the mouse, but cannot click on anything, press any keys on the keyboard, activate the Unity menu using the option key, press Ctrl-Alt-Del, or interact with the computer in any meaningful way. The only thing I can do is to force the computer to reboot.

What could I do to try to solve the problem, or at least diagnose it? I've observed it on at least three different programs: Chromium, Emacs, and Evince. I am running Ubuntu 14.04 on a Dell XPS laptop. I've had this installation for a couple of years and had never run into similar issues.

If you use a non-compoziting session like LXDE is it OK there?
Thanks

I've tried using both LXDE and Gnome with Metacity and did not observe the bug. I also noticed that I just had a recent update of graphics-related libraries (e.g. mesa), and the problem *seems* to be harder to replicate under Unity, although I haven't tested it thoroughly.
