Disappearing panels, both upper and lower, no Alt + F2?

Asked by george_rutkay

This is very annoying - Ubuntu 7.10 in our log-in account will sometimes just not draw the upper and lower panels. When that happens the "Alt + F2" thing doesn't work either, nothing happens.

But now it's become somewhat permanent!! What's going on?

I have the desktop, the background pictures and my desktop icons - and I can use the programs which have a desktop icon.

In order to log out I have to do Ctrl-Alt-Bkspc.

When I login as root I don't have this issue.

I tried to see if setting Desktop effects to "None" in the Appearance control panel would help - it made no difference at all.

Please help? Thanks!

Hello george....

create a launcher on the desktop via a right-click, Give the name as Terminal and command as gnome-terminal and save the launcher, Now open up the system monitor

Type in the terminal (created above)

gnome-system-monitor

will start up the system monitor

Now look for the process called gnome-panel under processes tab and kill that process..

Then open the terminal and give the command

gnome-panel

To start the gnome panel again

Have a try and keep us informed

Bhavani Shankar.

I can't launch terminal when the computer is in this condition - Alt + F2 does not work when this happens.

And right-clicking anywhere on the desktop, where the panels should be, only lets you create a folder or change desktop wallpaper.

But it only happens when my wife or I log-into our account - the kids account and the root account are still fine.

Oh, I removed Compiz completely and it's still happening - no panels at the top or bottom, only my dekstop icons. And to log-out I still have to Ctrl-Alt-Bkspc, there is no graceful proper way to get to the logout menu selection.
