Ubuntu updates
I had cause to re-install Ubuntu 16.04, after which every time I start Ubuntu I am told that updates are available. Unfortunately mostly when I start the updater I am told my computer is up to date. Before the re-install I automatically was advised of updates by the flashing of the icon, this now does not happen, I just get the oblong square advising of updates even if there is none. How do I get back to the flashing icon when updates are available.
Many thanks in advance,
Frednurt.

Many thanks, but, it's to complicated for me, I will continue to use Ubuntu as it is and hope it will stay with me until the next upgrade, at which time it may sort itself out.
Thanks for trying,
Frednurt.

The commands that you have executed have cared for installing all pending updates - without problems.
We can hope, that this has resolved the problem, and that the notification system for new updates is working again.
I recommend that you keep an eye on your system and report problems again, in case that they appear.
