System freeze on video playback on Ubuntu 16.04 with Dell inspiron 3551

Asked by Sagnik Dutta

I have a Dell inspiron 3551 which came pre-installed with Ubuntu 14.04 LTS. I upgraded it to Ubuntu 15.10 and then later to Ubuntu 16.04 but in both cases, the system freezes whenever i try to playback video( both streaming and locally stored). Recently, this has been happening whenever I am using the browser for prolonged intervals as well but it's more prominent during video playback as it barely plays for 5 mins before freezing up and all I can do at that point is to long press the power button and restart the system.
I got in touch with Dell and they ran diagnostics and informed me that the hardware was working perfectly and that this is a software issue.
Any sort of help would be appreciated as I am at a loss.

What desktop /shell are you using?
What video chip does the system use?

Thanks

I'm using a Dell inspiron 3551 laptop with Ubuntu 16.04.
It uses integrated Intel HD graphics.

Did you try a non-compoziting session like LXDE?

No, I didn't. I'll give it a try and let you know how it goes.

It's not freezing up anymore in the Lubuntu environment but the video is a bit glitchy at times though. Any suggestions?
