vlc, mplayer, handbrake issues

Hello,
I have a DVD I wanted to copy. I have been using Handbrake to copy disks and VLC to play them.
Handbrake will not copy the disk and VLC will not even play the video.
None of the other players will play it either. The DVD just will not load.
Is there a way you can help me figure out what is wrong?
