Password bypass

Asked by Mike

I purchased a computer with Ubuntu installed and cannot get past the password log in. The seller has given me numerous suggestions but cannot remember it. Can you offer a solution to bypass the password. I do have the reinstall disk, but would rather not use it until I become familar with Ubuntu.

Sure, the best solution would be to follow the instructions on this Ubuntu wiki page:

https://help.ubuntu.com/community/LostPassword

If that doesn't work or sounds too cryptic there are other guides around the web such as this one:
http://news.softpedia.com/news/Resetting-a-Forgotten-Root-Password-40544.shtml

Good luck

Stephen, thanks for your help in resetting my password; however, now I get the following message "The System Administrator is not allowed to log in from this screen". How do I get to another screen that will allow me to log in as the System Administrator?

Are you trying to log in as root? Everything can be done in Ubuntu without ever log in as root just using sudo or su. There is no reason you should ever have to or want to log in as root (read more at https://wiki.ubuntu.com/RootSudo).

While loading your computer select the recovery mode and enter "ls /home" to get the list of users.
Than you can reset the password:
passwd username

Or you can add a new user:
adduser username
passwd username

Hope it helps.

Thanks Max for your help. All logged in now under different username and everything is working great. I can see that I do have a lot to learn about Ubuntu.

Ihave the same problem, and everything worked when I added a new user, but when it prompted me for a new user password it won't let me type anything in. Can anyone help? Thanks
