How does the dashboard find graphical programs?

Asked by Eli

I am a developer working on a project to that deals with ChromeOS and Ubuntu, I need a way to get a list of the programs that are installed that have a GRAPHICAL side to them, that is programs like Ubuntu software center and GIMP, not programs like nano or gcc. I know there is a way to do this, as the Ubuntu dash does this very effectively(The Ubuntu logo in the top left of Ubuntu Desktop) that on click it shows only the graphical programs that you can then click to run. How could I get that same list of names?

Dash uses the files in /etc/share/applications folder

I know, I've explored that folder and found that it includes all applications, even terminal based ones. When you press on the icon, it shows ONLY the graphical apps -- I need this list of ONLY graphical programs, not the terminal based ones.
