Screensaver "Molecule" locks up

Asked by YSD-1-Jim

I upgraded to "Edgy" and since then I started checking out the screensavers. When I got to "Molecule" the computer locked up. The mouse moves, but you cannot click on any button or other screensaver. Now when ever the idle time reaches the preset, it starts this screensaver and locks up the computer. On the screen it just displays "Constructing Molecules". I have waited for over an hour for the problem to clear and it does not. I have tried to change screensavers, and cannot. As soon as I open the screensaver preferences, it locks up. I have checked for additional updates, and the computer is up to date.

Are your drivers correctly installed? direct rendering etc?

I am new to Linux, so I honestly cannot answer your question without a
little more guidance. I am trying to learn more about Linux as quick as I
can. I used to program in DOS, so I am hoping the switch will not be too
difficult. I don't like the direction Microsoft is heading, so I am hoping
Linux, especially Ubunto, will be the answer.

This was a new installation on a donated computer. It is a Dell with a P4
processor about 3 years old. After the installation a pop-up appeared
stating the newer version of Ubunto (Edgy) was available, so I downloaded
and installed the upgrade. All screensavers were working prior to the
upgrade.

In the meantime disable the screen-saver by going to the terminal Applications>Accessories>Terminal and entering the following.

gconf-editor

then press enter, the Configuration Editor window will appear, and you can browse to /apps/gnome-screensaver
Then you can change the value for mode to 'blank-only' without the quotes and then delete the value for themes and that will remove the screensaver for you so it's not locking up.

After you get that done, then it's time to move onto making sure your drivers are up to par. Though I really don't ever set up screensavers, it is more power efficient just to have it shut off the monitor then to use all of that extra power for nothing, but that is just my opinion.

I have a similar set of symptoms. My Toshiba laptop has never had a graceful shutdown.

1. I went to try to the kubuntu kde desktop. Then decided I would go back to gnome. Now my machine starts off with the "bar" loading in blue kubuntu then cuts over to brown gnome but does not ask me to log in.

2. When I leave it, the screensaver lasts about 5 hours. Then the machine goes back to intrepid's ibex wallpaper, but without panels. So, while the mouse will move around, there is nowhere to click on, and the machine is effectively dead.

3. Pressing the on/off button will get rid of the wallpaper. Then I just have a blank screen and a cursor. That state requires that I cut all power (take out the battery), reinsert it and reboot (no login then required).

Is there any news on when the hibernate fixes will become available?

Can you help with this problem?
