Ubuntu-64 on a Dell XPS 420 with Intel Core 2 Quad Q6600?

Asked by Diabolus on 2008-04-09

Hi guys,
I just got my new Dell XPS 420 with an Intel Core 2 Quad Q6600 quad-core processor @ 2.4 MHz, and I'm wondering whether the 64-bit Ubuntu would run on this machine.

I know Intel indicates that the processor is 64-bit, but is this sufficient to run a 64-bit OS?

I'm puzzled because Dell does mention, in the machine manual, that the architecture supports a maximum of 8 GB (4 x 2 GB modules) if a 64-bit OS is installed, but then, when customizing the machine for ordering, offers a maximum of 4 GB RAM and doesn't offer 64-bit Vista at all, not even as an option!

Thanks for your inputs!

Hello Diabolus:

Yes this is more than sufficient to run ubuntu 64 bit edition:

Refer this link for the system requirements:

https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Installation/SystemRequirements

and the 64 bit version can be downloaded from:

http://ftp.jaist.ac.jp/pub/Linux/ubuntu-releases/gutsy/ubuntu-7.10-desktop-amd64.iso

and for burning the CD's please refer:

https://help.ubuntu.com/community/BurningIsoHowto

Make sure you burn the CD's at a slow pace (say 4x)

And to verify the MD5sums please refer:

https://help.ubuntu.com/community/HowToMD5SUM

(If the MD5sum is not correct, I suggest you to download the ISO and burn it again)

and to dual boot windows vista and ubuntu please refer:

http://apcmag.com/how_to_dualboot_vista_with_linux_vista_installed_first.htm

Hope the info helps

Regards

Bhavani Shankar.
