Screen crash...no exit

Screen crash....only way to get out is to shutdown machine and then start. None of the fixes on the web work.ie. alt f1, alt scr prn etc. Using peppermint six on amd 2.3 ghz 4 gb ram... help ...I have a picture but can't find how to post it on here.
