How do I share broadband with an existing Win XP system.

Asked by Hermann

Hi, I have two desktops and two laptops (all XP) sharing a broadband connection. Have installed ubunto 6.06 on third desktop. How do I connect to the XP desktop which is sharing the connection ? Have spent some time searching for documentation but have not been successful so far.

If you use the built in internet connection sharing feature of windows.
It should be as simple as selecting to use 'dhcp' for that network connection in linux.
(System -> Administration -> Networking -> Select your connection -> Properties -> Automatic Configuration (DHCP)).

I -think- windows xp acts as a dhcp-server in a setup like that.

You might not have setup your dns settings configure properly and firefox isn't able to lookup the domain names.

You can use opendns nameservers:

System -> Administration -> networking -> dns

Then add the following dns servers.

208.67.222.222 and 208.67.220.22
