Ubuntu 16.04 upgrade
Hello,
I have ubuntu 12.04. I tried to upgrade to Ubuntu 16.04 through the software updater.
As it was checking for updates, there was a message that said: "software could not be downloaded from the repository, please check your internet connection".
I also tried: sudo do-release upgrade" I think, and got the message: "no new releases available".
My internet connection is working just fine. Is there a way to fix this?
Thank you.
David

If you are on Precise you will need to first upgrade to Trusty. From Trusty you can then upgrade to Xenial. You cannot upgrade directly from Precise to Xenial unless you wipe Precise off the system and do a clean install of Xenial from CD / USB.
The clean install method will get you to Xenial sooner and will be a cleaner OS. You can restore your user data from your backups.

Hello,,
Thank you for your reply.
I did the following commands in the # 1 except the last two because there were errors at the end of the command #3 so I was not sure if I should run the last two commands until the errors were fixed.
Here is the output.
$ uname -a

1. Your system is already upgraded to Ubuntu 14.04 trusty tahr.
2. You have some references to outdated software sources that have to be removed.
Start the system settings - software & updates dialogue
disable (un-select) the CD-Rom and the rohityadav/vlmc repository.
Then re-try the commands
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get dist-upgrade
sudo dpkg --audit
and report the outcome

Sudo dpkg --audit does not work. No out put.

The command "sudo dpkg --audit" is supposed to display packages that are only half-installed or have broken dependencies or some other problem. If the command does not show any output, then this is a positive sign ("no news is good news").
What is the full output of the three commands that I gave in my previous message?

I am sorry. I did not get the commands into the terminal. I followed post #2 and now wish I didn't. I downloaded the ISO and did a fresh install. Everything looks good but the are no additional drivers and no wireless driver. I did some research and found that the drivers are on the cd in a folder called "pool". I clicked on the folder, clicked on the driver file and it opened in the software center program with an install button. But clicking on the button does nothing. There are about 10 applications that can be installed but the install button won't work. I can't find any commands to install these drivers on the disk using the terminal. Can you please help me with this?
Thank you

You have already created another question document for your new problem (Ubuntu 16.04, no cable network available and the WLAN device not working).
I suggest you mark this question document as solved and just keep another one open, e.g. https:/
