Too many newbie tweaks

Asked by Enigma

Oh my, where do I begin? It started when I tried to download Azureus. I tried to just install it from the Package Manager, but it kept saying that I was not connected to the internet(but I obviously am) and couldn't download it.
(Does anyone know why it would do this?)

So, next I came on here to figure out how to download it from the web. I learned that it would help to download Automatix2 first. So, I went to that website and tried to download it. When I did, I started getting this error message:

E: Type "wget" is not known on line 74 in source list /etc/apt/sources.list
E: The list of sources could not be readGo to the repository dialog to correct the problem.
E:_cache->open()failed, please report.

Well, thankfully it had happened to someone else, and so I followed the directions that said:

Open /etc/apt/sources.list
gksudo gedit /etc/apt/sources.list
Go to line 74 and remove the word wget from that line.Meaning right now it would be something like wget deb...something something
Change it to deb something something.
The run sudo apt-get install -f and sudo apt-get update

So I followed this. I think. I got to the part where I removed the word "wget" and then I saved it and closed it (because when I went to run the second part it said that I had left the other window open).

Anyhow, now there is a new message:

A unresolvable problem occurred while initializing the package information.
Please report this bug against the 'update-manager' package and include the following error message:
'E:Type 'http://www.getautomatix.com/keys/automatix2.key' is not known on line 74 in source list /etc/apt/sources.list, E:The list of sources could not be read.'

So now what do I do?

Before line 74 said:

wget http://www.getautomatix.com/keys/automatix2.key

and now it says:

http://www.getautomatix.com/keys/automatix2.key

That is my first problem.
The next one is kinda the same. I have used Firefox for the last couple of years on Windows, and I am used to having to install missing plug-ins. However, on Ubuntu, when I hit "Install Missing plug-ins" it says it can't do that, that I have to do it manually.

I wish I could, but I really don't know what I'm doing. I keep trying to do it and I just keep picking "extract all files" and I just keep getting more and more windows with folders I don't understand.

So, on my desktop I have downloaded and sitting there: something that looks like a blank page for Java 6, a box for Azureus, and a folder for Azureus, and I don't know what to do with any of them. As for the Adobe plug in...I don't even know where that went!

My first language is windows, and this is all ubuntu to me!

My most sincere thanks to anyone who can help me!

Hello !

If you really want to install antomatix2, the line you should have in your /etc/apt/sources.list is (if you have Ubuntu 7.10) :

deb http://www.getautomatix.com/apt gutsy main

If you want a step-by-step howto, you can have a look here :

http://www.getautomatix.com/wiki/index.php?title=Installation

Please note that automatix may solve some of your problems, but it is unsupported by us, so if you use it, it's at your own risk (we'll be there for help anyway, but don't expect too much)

Hope this helps !

Regards,
Benoît

Automatix is also no longer supported by the automatix folk either. Ubuntu-restricted-extras covers most of the same stuff.

I don't really want to install it, I just kinda thought that I should......so how do I make it, and the error messages go away? My ONLY purpose for trying to install it was that I saw it recommended to make installing Azureus easier.....which, so far it isn't! LOL

Press Alt-F2 and enter: gedit /etc/apt/sources.list.
Then select all the text in the file, copy and post it here.

Automatix has bugs that can ruin your install. Don't use Automatix is a good start. Some issues won't come up tll you try to upgrade to a newer version of ubuntu but by that point its to late.
This seems to be a common problem.
