fvwm startup fails

Asked by Pierre Frenkiel

For the first time since I use it (and it's a rather long time), fvwm suddenly
refused to start, with the following messages:

     [FVWM][scanForPixmap]: <<WARNING>>
   Couldn't load image from texmaker.xpm
    [FVWM][scanForPixmap]: <<WARNING>>
   Couldn't load image from /usr/share/pixmaps/download.svg
   [FVWM][scanForPixmap]: <<WARNING>>
   Couldn't load image from /usr/share/pixmaps/ekiga-logo-icon.png
   [FVWM][scanForPixmap]: <<WARNING>>
   Couldn't load image from /usr/share/gnome-system-tools/pixmaps/shares.xpm
   [FVWM][scanForPixmap]: <<WARNING>>
   Couldn't load image from /usr/share/pixmaps/kpalmdoc.xpm
libpng error: PNG file corrupted by ASCII conversion

The files were actually present, and after 2 hours of google without any
  result, I did
       apt-get purge fvwm fvwm-crystal fvwm-icons
  followed by
       apt-get install fvwm fvwm-crystal fvwm-icons

and miraculously. fvwm came again to life.

I'm rather puzzled, as I've no idea of how this this could happen so
suddenly, and without any change in any confg or any package.

Has anybody a possible explanation?

fvwm version: 2.5.21-1, on Ubuntu 7.10

Same situation for me when upgrading to Hardy beta.

In this case I analyzed the error using "strace fvwm". I relized that there was a wrong PNG /usr/share/images/gtkam/gtkam-camera.png installed by the gtkam package. Removed it and everything is now working.

Probably in your case a file in fvwm icons got corrupted.

Can you help with this problem?
