Unable to watch my streaming services on Ubuntu 16.04

Asked by wordsmyth2

I installed Ubuntu 16.04 and now find I can't watch my local streaming services - Netflix and others show a blank black screen and request either an Android app. or Microsoft Silverlight and neither of these work with Ubuntu - so what now? Fortunately I have 14.04 installed on my main work computer, but there's no way I'm switching to 16.04 if this problem can't be fixed. Please advise?

Is this a clean install, or did you upgrade from 14.04 / 15.10 using the Internet?

Thanks

A clean install, A.P. I have only once tried an upgrade: my computer
crashed. I also installed 16.04 on my daughter's computer: same problem.
And I upgraded from 14.04 by downloading 15.10 and also did a clean
install. No problem watching streaming sites with 15.10:-(

Before doing this, I ran Ubuntu 16.04 from a live USB:
SAME PROBLEM.

Here is the output you requested, taken from the hard disk installation:

sudo apt-get --purge remove flashplugin-installer

Enable the partner repository and install the adobe-flashplugin package, this should help

Tried your suggestion, got this on the terminal:

wordsmyth@wordsmyth-Aspire-E1-531:~$ sudo apt-get --purge remove flashplugin-installer
[sudo] password for wordsmyth:
E: Could not get lock /var/lib/dpkg/lock - open (11: Resource temporarily unavailable)
E: Unable to lock the administration directory (/var/lib/dpkg/), is another process using it?

Tried again - it worked.
But problem remains.
I CAN see You Tube Videos, but I can't see local streaming services in Australia: Netflix, Stan or Presto I CAN on Ubuntu 14.04. This is frustrating/ I'm still using the latter until this problem is resolved - if it ever can be.

This is what local services have to say when I try to play a movie:

Netflix system requirements for HTML5 Player and Silverlight

You can use our HTML5 player or Silverlight to watch Netflix movies and TV shows on PCs running Windows XP or later, and Intel-based Macs running OS X Tiger (v10.4.11) or later. You'll find a complete list of requirements below for HTML5, Silverlight 4, and Silverlight 5.

BUT, as stated above, I don't get this on 14.04, where ALL streaming services work fine with Ubuntu...

Okay, all is well: I just needed to download extra codecs, which I'd forgotten. I was confused by being able to access some sites but not others. Sometimes the old brain gets a mite fuzzy, so apologies to those who helped with my "problem": you at least encouraged me to keep looking for a solution. Many thanks.
