Resize the NTFS in Windows and reboot. Do a full chkdsk on the NTFS partition in Windows and power off the system. From the cold boot, select the Ubuntu media as the boot device.

I did what you said above still no option to boot into ubuntu and windows. I have used ubuntu 15.10 and 16.04 both had the same result. Can you explain the steps of using the something else option.

I have a HP Pavilion dv7 computer. I did a full reinstall of a HP windows 7. I then upgraded to windows 10. I partitioned the hard drive to 30GB. I tried to install ubuntu 16.04 but it would not give me the option of installing ubuntu alongside windows.

Do you boot into the Ubuntu installer from DVD or from USB stick?
What choices do you get for partitioning the hard drive in course of an installation attempt?

I have tried both USB and DVD with the same result. The options are: Wipe the hard drive and just install ubuntu some other thing that relate to installing just ubuntu and another option saying something else.
