Ubuntu 16.04 Gnome-Software is missing

Asked by Brutal_Moose

I am a novice at Linux. If you have advice, or an answer to my question, please give a full explanation, so that I may understand it. Please do not omit any steps in the instructions, or I will probably not be able to complete them. Thank you.

      Ubuntu 16.04 laptop.

After successfully upgrading from Ubuntu 15.10 to Ubuntu 16.04, Gnome-Software is missing. The older Ubuntu Software Center is not functional as well, incidentally.

Search for it in software centre and install it. If software centre does what you need, why do you want something else?

Brutal_Moose is describing a real problem. I can report at least two more victims.

A friend and myself are both experienced Ubuntu users who were updating 16.04 desktop amd64 daily for the past several months as Ubuntu Software Center was replaced with Gnome Software Center and then, in the last day or two, with Ubuntu Software.

The release version's Ubuntu Software icon looks nice in the Launcher, but fails to load. For the beginner, there's no obvious substitute. THIS NEEDS REPAIR. It probably does not affect everyone, or it would have been repaired before now.

As a work-around, I installed Synaptic Package Manager. Then I searched and found a late-2015 article to reinstall a non-working Ubuntu Software Center. Although it was for 15.10, I entered its fifteen or so command lines. That worked; I'm now running the old Ubuntu Software Center.

I still await a proper fix.

I think they patched it, because I turned it on yesterday, and the new, improved software center works. Parsnip, none of your answer was relevant to my question at all.

The problem solved itself days later. I think they patched it.

I found this problem on my upgrade from 15.10 to 16.04 .
looking in the search my computer I found the old ubuntu software manager and the ubuntu software both wer there the new on didnt work and the old did so i right kliced on ubuntu software manager and removed it . next i opened ubuntu software and it worked fine . I think the old 15.10 program was the reason the new 16.04 program didnt work.

I installed Ubuntu 16.4. LTS (64bit) today 26 November 2016. There is no Gnome Software Center and the Ubuntu Software Center is unusable in the way described above. The system is useless if I cannot install software.

If you run:

sudo apt-get install synaptic

You can use that instead.
