I've just installed Ubuntu 16.04 on Acer Aspire 5733Z but X do not starts. Formerly it was running Mint 17 and it worked well. How to troubleshoot?

Asked by zraffer

I have Acer Aspire 5733Z notebook.
I used to run it with Linux Mint 17 and it worked well.
Today I gave Ubuntu a try and I've installed Ubuntu 16.04.
Installation finished OK.
But after reboot I do not see X environment.
I have managed to boot into recovery mode root console.
What should I do next to troubleshoot the issue?

1. I've reinstalled it with reproducing of issue. (partitions were formatted manually by gnome-disks, just as I did before)
2. But then... I've reinstalled it again with system working OK! (now partitions were formatted by installer)

So problem is solved.
Is it possible that the installer use different logic for manually formatted partitions and this caused an issue?
