Photo printing fronm desktop apps works badly

Asked by Jack Kern

The GIMP prints photographs perfectly but F-Spot and the image viewerfail to place the image properly on small paper, say A6 or 4x6, apparently no matter what paper settings are selected in the paper dialog. The print preview seems useless as well.

F-Spot and the image viewer apparently share an another (different from The GIMP) print page setup interface, print preview and print function, all of which seem broken. What's up?

I have tried several Epson printers for Gutenprint with the same failed results.

If others have this problem, they could just use The GIMP as I do but for many The GIMP might be intimidating and should be unnecessary anyhow.

There is a problem in GNOME <2.18 in that the printing systems are many, inconsistent and commonly useless. I am told by the GNOME 2.17 release notes that this is being remedied with a shiney new unified printing system, and Feisty will have GNOME 2.18 (the stable version of GNOME 2.17.) Meantime, I suggest you use the GIMP as you said.

Can you help with this problem?
