slow application launching

I have installed ubuntu 6.10 64-bit version on a 3.20 GHz INTEL pentium 4 (hyperthreading enabled) processor.
I have 1 GB ram

My start up is very slow and whenever I launch an application it is taking quiet a big time(abt 2-3 mins) to launch it.For example, if wish to open the terminal and click on terminal, it shows starting terminal for 2 mins and then terminal appear.

What could be the problem and please help me in solving this problem. I am a beginner.

I don't know why that would be so slow, but I would recommend that you get a newer version of ubuntu and that you don't use 64bit version. 64bit is only necessary if you have more than 4GB RAM and each application needs to use more than 4GB RAM. The 64bit version will lack certain software, like adobe flash, and it will not give you any big advantages.
