How do I convert home movie DVDs to MPEG-2 files?

Asked by Aaron Whitehouse

My video camera creates DVDs. That is great if you want to just put them into a DVD player and go, but makes life really difficult if you want to play/edit them on a Gnu/Linux system.

As I understand things, DVDs store the video in VOB files that are essentially MPEG2 files. Therefore, I should be able to convert the VOBs into MPEG2 without losing quality. Is that correct?

Is there some utility/GStreamer pipeline that will allow me to set the machine up once to work for DVDs and create a folder of MPEG2 files of the same quality? Then I could use the MPEG2 files in PiTiVi etc. without having to set the machine up to bypass DVD issues.

Any suggestions?

Hello

Yes you can do that with Avidemux

To install avidemux,

you need to have extra repositories enabled..
To enable all the software repositories do ref this link..

http://psychocats.net/ubuntu/sources

after getting all the required repositories enabled

Type the following command in a terminal (applications -> accessories -> terminal)
